Work experience can take a variety of forms, say Little et al (2001) and identified three main categories (Work Experience Group, 2002: 23), namely:
- Organised work experience as part of a programme of study
- Organised work experience external to a programme of study
- Ad hoc work experience external to a programme of study.
Work experience could be embedded in the curriculum; for example, experience (perhaps project-linked) that is assessed and accredited; or part-time vacation, term-time paid, and voluntary work that students are increasingly undertaking.
