My PB (personal best time) gradually decreased, as did my waist shrunk, and my weight reading moved from obese to over weight.
Fellow regular parkrunners noticed my running improvements and remarked in passing that ‘if you can run 5k, then you can do 10k’. This notion was reinforced by comments such as:
- in addition to parkrun, I do one formal 10k race per month
- by registering for and completing certain races, Discovery Vitality reimburses part of the costs
Towards the end of 2016 this non-runner registered for, and completed, his first formal 10k road race, as well as a 8k trail run. Both were tough but exhilarating.
Because formal road races generally require that each athlete displays a valid licence number, I decided to join Team Vitality, a virtual running club, after some consultation, for 2017.
In 2017 a whole new world unfolded for me, namely formal road races. I learned a lot through trial and error, but more about these in other posts.
I occasionally hear remarks to the effect ‘if you can do 10, you can manage 21’, or ‘when are you doing Comrades’. With regard to the latter, probably never, and the first, that I am not yet ready, may never be?
