My favourite Tarot decks, at the moment, are the Universal Waite, the Buckland Romani Tarot, Kat Black's Golden Tarot, Rachel Pollack's Shining Tribe Tarot, the Bohemian Gothic Tarot, the Victorian Romantic Tarot, the Modern Medieval Tarot, the Haindl Tarot , Mark McElroy's Bright Idea Deck, the Visconti-Sforza, the Da Vinci Enigma Tarot and the Piatnik Tarot of Marseille.
Conventional wisdom says that beginners should start with the Rider-Waite deck, or one of its clones such as the Universal Waite, the Radiant Rider Waite, or the Universal Tarot. The reason for this is that most of the books on Tarot are written with one of these decks in mind, and most often the Rider-Waite.
There is nothing wrong with starting with a completely different deck, however, especially not if this is the one deck you wish to study, and if the deck is accompanied by a book that gives you enough to understand and use the deck. In this case, just make sure you get the deck + book kit (if available), and not just the deck with a little booklet or pamphlet (often called the LWB -- "little white book").
I will be reviewing these decks shortly.
