Can you imagine? Of course you can! And the more you practise your imagination, the more creative you become. (You know that you are creative, don’t you?)
Imagination is an essential ingredient in creativity, including the ability to imagine possibilities. Several creativity tests measure divergent thinking by asking you to imagine as many alternatives as possible. These could be titles for a story plot, the consequences of an imaginary situation, or different uses for an object.
Whatever our natural aptitude for creativity, if we practise, we get better at it. A good place to begin is to practise the skills required for divergent thinking. Let’s do it with Tarot cards:
- Draw a card. What is going on? What is the story of the card? List at least five possibilities.
- Draw a card. What has happened to create the circumstances on the card? List at least five possibilities.
- Draw a card. What are the consequences? That is, what have the events on the card set in motion? Imagine at least five scenarios.
This exercise not only gives your imagination and creativity a workout, it is also excellent for getting to know the cards. It is also great practice for reading the cards. When the cards are laid out in a spread, the reader chooses the story that best fits the circumstances.
